Aim:

The aim of this activity is to make you more familiar with data-logging technique and to perform measurements with an interface and a temperature sensor.

Equipment:

In this experiment you will need a computer, data-logging software, a data-logger, two temperature sensors: one placed below a white piece of paper, one placed below a black piece of paper and a strong lamp.

In this activity you are going to use an interface and a temperature sensor to record the temperature changes.

In the original ESTABLISH activity students investigate how materials can influence the temperature inside a house model. Since you might not have such a house model you can simplify your investigation by using a strong lamp (e.g. bright light bulb (200 W)) to directly warm up your temperature sensor.

Task:

  • As described in Activity 4-1.3:  Heating and Cooling, Designing an Low Energy Home - What is the effect of sunlight on the temperature inside your house model? design an experiment to test whether the colour of the material affects the temperature measured by the sensor.
  • Explain the results.
  • Describe your investigation.
  • Draw prediction graphs showing how the temperature is changing in time.
  • Record data and compare the results.
